But we do live in the same energy-guzzling world as everyone else.

And let me tell you, the energy demand numbers I'm about to share are simply wild.

We're not just talking about a slight uptick in energy use…

By 2027, the electricity consumed by AI could surpass the total energy use of entire nations.

A single AI model

Can drain as much juice as 130 American homes use in a year. Microsoft's carbon footprint has ballooned by 30% since 2020 due to AI, and Google's emissions have skyrocketed 50% since 2019.

This kind of growth isn’t something that can be covered by current energy production; it's going to require new power plants everywhere.

By 2026

AI will be chowing down on over 40% of the power in data centers. Almost half of our available electricity — just to keep AI humming.

And by 2027, AI might be responsible for 0.5% of the world's electricity - that's more than some countries use.

But here's the deal - AI doesn't take breaks. It needs power non-stop, every single day. When the sun's not shining or the wind's not blowing, AI's still demanding energy.

From 8 TWh to 52 TWh in just two years - that's the growth curve. A 550% increase in AI's power appetite by 2026, like adding five Chicagos to our grid in one go.

Have you ever been to a wine tasting dinner? Often there is a reception that begins with some sort of sparkling wine. When guests are finally seated there might be a salad with a Chardonnay, then an appetizer with a medium-bodied Red. Next a medium-rare steak with a big old Napa cab…

We would all agree that each of those wine was different in taste, color, and consistency, right?

Well, a barrel of oil is no different than a bottle of wine.

The Myth of Uniform Oil

Many believe oil is just oil, but that's far from the truth. The real story is all about quality.

The key here is API gravity. It's how we measure oil's density in the industry.

The higher the API number, the lighter and more valuable the oil. Water has an API gravity of 10; oil with an API above that floats, below it — the oil sinks.

A Tale of Two Oils

Let's look at two contrasting examples:

• Saudi Arabia's Arab Light, with an API gravity of 33°, flows through pipelines like water.

• In contrast, Venezuela's extra-heavy crude, with an API below 10°, is like trying to move syrup through a straw - a real challenge.

Economic Dominoes

This difference isn't just academic; it has profound economic impacts:

In Venezuela, handling this heavy crude means adding lighter oils to make it move, heating pipelines constantly, and investing more energy and money into extraction.

Saudi Arabia's oil, however, flows with ease, like a well-oiled machine (haha, sorry couldn’t resist).

How does this play out in the market?

Venezuela faces discounts of $10-15 per barrel, billions spent on specialized infrastructure, slow market responsiveness, and elevated processing costs by a factor of 2-3.

The math is clear: at 1 million barrels a day, that's $10-15 million in lost revenue each day, translating to $4-5 billion annually in discounts alone.

Contrast this with Saudi Arabia, where lighter crude means lower costs, faster production, and enviable profit margins.

The Gold Standard

Then there's West Texas Intermediate (WTI) from the U.S., with an API gravity of 39.6 - light, sweet, with barely any sulfur. It's the oil industry's equivalent of a premium product.

But there's hope for those with heavy crude:

"Complex" refineries, rated by the Nelson Complexity Index (NCI), can turn this challenge into opportunity. Higher NCI refineries can process heavy crude into profitable products, earning $15-25 per barrel, while simpler refineries with light crude might only see $5-10.

Jamnagar Refinery in India, with an NCI of 21.1, is a prime example, adept at handling the heaviest, sourest crude. However, such capability requires substantial investment.

This scenario sets up an intriguing dynamic:

Countries with light, sweet crude can command premium prices. Those with heavy crude must decide - sell at a discount, invest in complex refining, or let their oil reserves remain untapped.

The Takeaway

In the oil industry, it's not just about how much you have; it's about what you have. Quality is king, and understanding this is crucial for anyone looking to make smart moves in the energy sector.

Stay vigilant, keep learning, and remember, in energy, knowledge doesn't just create opportunity; it defines it.

We're talking lithium, cobalt, nickel - the lifeblood of EV batteries. These materials don't just magically appear; they're dug out of the earth using heavy machinery, often powered by diesel.

The refining process? Even more energy-intensive, relying on fossil fuels in many regions. And let's not forget the environmental damage from mining - deforestation, water pollution, and habitat destruction.

Yikes.

It's a carbon-heavy start for these so-called clean machines, and the human and ecological costs are high.

Battery Manufacturing

Making one EV battery is like running a small town's worth of power, often from coal or gas. Studies estimate that producing a single battery for something like a Tesla Model 3 can emit 3 to 10 tons of CO2, depending on the energy source. That's because battery production involves high-temperature processes, chemical treatments, and a lot of electricity.

In places like China, where coal dominates the grid, the carbon footprint is even worse. It's a massive upfront cost that offsets the "zero-emission" promise right out of the gate.

Assembly and Transport

Building and moving parts around? More fossil fuels.

From the steel in the chassis to the plastics in the interior, the manufacturing process relies on energy that's often dirty.

Then there's the global supply chain - components are shipped across oceans, flown between continents, all powered by oil-based fuels.

Your EV's got a carbon footprint from the get-go, and it's not small.

Add in the energy needed for factory operations, and you're looking at a vehicle that's already clocked up significant emissions before it even hits the road.

The Real Energy Picture

Modern life is built on oil and gas, period. From our gadgets to our hospitals, it's all tied to fossil fuels.

EVs are no exception - they're part of the same system, and pretending otherwise is just wishful thinking.

Charging with Coal?

If your power's coming from a coal plant, your EV's not as green as you think.

They've got an environmental price tag, too. Building a charging network means manufacturing concrete, steel, and electronics - all energy-intensive processes.

Upgrading the grid to handle increased demand? More construction, more materials, more emissions.

And let's not forget the land use - charging stations need space, which can mean clearing land or repurposing existing areas. It's a hidden cost that gets glossed over in the rush to electrify everything, but it's real and it's significant.

Looking at the Full Lifecycle

Here's where EVs stand against gas cars - it's not just about tailpipe emissions; it's about the whole lifecycle, from cradle to grave.

Break-Even Point?

An EV needs to be driven a metric ton of miles before it's cleaner than a traditional car. Studies suggest that, depending on the size of the battery and the cleanliness of the grid, an EV might need to travel anywhere from 20,000 to 50,000 miles to offset its manufacturing emissions compared to a gas car.

And let's not forget - not everyone keeps their car that long. If you trade in after a few years, you might never reach that break-even point, leaving the environment worse off.

How long do these batteries last, and can we recycle them without causing more harm?

That's the real question. Most EV batteries are rated for 8-10 years or 100,000-150,000 miles, but that depends on usage, climate, and charging habits.

After that, they're not useless - they can be repurposed for energy storage - but recycling is…tricky. Current methods are energy-intensive and not always efficient, and the materials recovered aren't always reusable.

Plus, there's the risk of toxic waste if batteries aren't disposed of properly. Oh, yay! Toxic waste! It's a challenge not fully solved yet, and it could undermine the long-term benefits of EVs.

EVs are interesting…

…no doubt, but they're not the zero-emission saviors they’re made out to be. If you like the tech, and the feel, and the drive…RAD.

Trump has followed up on his tariff threats, beginning with Mexico and Canada.

All imports from these countries are now subject to a 25% import levy.

Except Canadian crude. That’s got a discount, so it’s 10%.

The basis? The approvals didn’t account for Scope 3 emissions from those fields.
